Los Angeles Chargers Interested in Free Agent Cornerback Darrelle Revis
The season is still young, but the Los Angeles Chargers will have to make do without cornerback Jason Verrett for the rest of the campaign after he opted to undergo surgery on his left knee.
With Verrett out of the lineup, second-year pro Trevor Williams had to step up and start at the number two cornerback position. However, it appears that the Chargers may also be considering signing a certain big name cornerback who is still on the free agent market.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chargers are among a handful of clubs who have reached out to Darrelle Revis recently.
"One person close to Revis said this weekend that the cornerback is still expected to play in 2017, even though he has not visited any teams yet. Revis has been training in Florida and is still interested in a return to the NFL," Schefter said.
"The Chargers made contact with Revis before they placed Jason Verrett on injured reserve Saturday, which made it official that they are in need of help at cornerback. Verrett decided to undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee, a source told Schefter," he added.
The seven-time Pro-Bowl has had a turbulent offseason. He was arrested back in February and charged with four felonies and one misdemeanor following an altercation in Pittsburgh, but the charges were dismissed a month later after his friend testified that he was the one who assaulted the two victims.
Revis was cleared and the league has decided not to punish him. However, he was left jobless because the New York Jets had decided to release him shortly after the free agency period began.
Revis is no longer in his prime and his production has taken a dip last season. But he's still a solid cornerback and the Chargers could use someone with his experience on their roster.
