Louis CK Connects Deep Loneliness With Denying Kids Cellphones; It's Brilliant and Hilarious
Louis C.K. once again showed why he is one of the most insightful comedians of his generation in an appearance this week on TBS' "Conan." In a five minute segment that has already gone viral on YouTube, he explains why deep loneliness as an innate part of human nature leads him to deny cellphones for his kids.
Cellphones take away opportunities for kids to practice empathy, Louis C.K. explains, because of the lack of face-to-face human interaction. Additionally, he says that people use cellphones to avoid thoughts about their own internal emptiness.
"Underneath everything," Louis C.K. said, "there's that thing. Like, a empty, forever empty. You know what I'm talkin' about?"
The audience laughs in acknowledgement. Christians recognize that "forever empty" as the separation from God that occurs as a result of our rebellion from Him; a divorce that can only be reconciled through Christ's sacrifice on our behalf.
We push away the sadness that comes with recognizing the "forever empty," Louis C.K. explains, by keeping constantly busy with our cellphones.
