'Lucy 2' News, Release Date: Luc Besson Done With Script for Sequel
Despite the lack of updates about "Lucy 2," it looks like the sequel to the 2014 movie will still see the light of the day. In fact, recent reports confirmed that Luc Besson has already written the script for the upcoming film.
A few days ago, Marc Shmuger, the head of Besson's film studio EuropaCorp, confirmed that the film was still in active development and that it already has a script. The existence of a sequel was announced a year after the first film hit theaters, which was not surprising considering the success of the Scarlett Johansson-topbilled project.
"Lucy" was one of the biggest hits of 2014 and earned an impressive $463 million at the global box office, overtaking Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules." The film did not only make a lot of money internationally but also garnered positive reviews from both fans and critics. Although EuropaCorp has been tight-lipped about the progress of the sequel since announcing it in 2015, the studio recently confirmed that the project was not yet dead and that it was still being actively developed.
Right now, the only update confirmed regarding the sequel was that EuropaCorp was moving forward with it. During a recent shareholders meeting, Shmuger acknowledged the disappointing performance of their latest film "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" and said that they were now hashing over their strategy to be able to recoup after losing $135 million last fiscal year. That strategy involves moving forward with their other projects, including "Lucy 2" and the next "Taken" movie.
As to when the production for "Lucy 2" will start, Shmuger did not specify when the movie will start filming. Also, there is no word yet whether Johansson would return to reprise her role as the eponymous Lucy, who was able to acquire super thinking powers after taking some super drugs in the first movie.
Fans can purchase "Lucy" on digital and Blu-Ray and DVD.
