He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, and served as head counselor at a pre-college program at Stanford University.

Mangione comes from a prominent real estate family in the Baltimore area, and his grandfather, Nick Mangione Sr., turned the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland, into a renowned golf course community after purchasing it in the 1970s, according to the Times.

The family purchased Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland, in the 1980s, and founded Lorien Health Services, a nursing home company that is owned by Luigi's father, Louis Mangione. The family also owned the local radio station WCBM.

Freddie Leatherbury, 26, who graduated with Mangione, said he was a disciplined athlete and intelligent student.

"He was very smart, a pretty big math guy, really well read and quite well liked to be honest. I don't have any bad memories of him. He had a very healthy social circle," Leatherbury told the Times.
