Mac Pro 2017 Latest News: Apple to 'Do More in the Pro Area,' Says CEO Tim Cook

More than a thousand days have already passed since Apple released an updated iteration of the Mac Pro. The current Mac Pro model was announced back in 2013, and after more than three years of waiting for an update, some Apple users and fans have become worried that the company could be abandoning its Pro desktops entirely.

Amid these growing concerns, Apple's chief executive Tim Cook has finally addressed the issue, insisting that the company remains committed to the Pro market.

During a Q&A session at Apple's shareholder meeting in its Cupertino campus on Tuesday, Feb. 28, Cook reassured its investors that Apple is still very much focused on its professional customers and that the company has plans to "do more" in the Pro area.

"You will see us do more in the pro area," Cook said. "The pro area is very important to us. The creative area is very important to us in particular," he added.

Although Cook's remarks were directed toward the Mac, Apple Watch, services, and iPad, his statement may reassure Apple users who are worried that the company could be abandoning its desktop Mac lineup, especially the Mac Pro, according to MacRumors.

"Don't think something we've done or something that we're doing that isn't visible yet is a signal that our priorities are elsewhere," Cook also told investors.

Should the Mac Pro get an update this year, rumors suggest that it will be powered by the next-generation Intel Xeon E5 processor, offering an option of 14 or 18 cores. The new Mac Pro may also be offering more Thunderbolt ports in the form of USB-3.

Since the standard 15-inch MacBook Pro now comes with 16 GB RAM, the updated entry-level Mac Pro is expected to arrive with the same level of specifications, and to be configurable to more than 64 GB.

Apple has made no official announcements about the development and release date of the next Mac Pro.
