'Made in Abyss' Episode 12 Spoilers: The True Nature of the Curse to Be Revealed in Penultimate Episode

Riko and Reg may have made it to the fourth layer of the Abyss, but even bigger threats seem to await them as the Japanese fantasy anime series, "Made in Abyss" nears its final episode. Also, Reg also seems to be getting closer to cracking the mystery behind Lyza's true fate.

The previous episode saw the Hollow, Nanachi, doing all she could do to save Riko's life. And while she has not yet gone into the deep details about who she was and what truly happened to her, she has managed to shed some light on what the Sixth Layer Curse could possibly do to a human being.

As it is, anyone who has ever reached the Sixth Layer and attempted to ascend from there will lose their humanity to the Curse. Nanachi has, for some reason, managed to keep a part of her humanity, but her companion, a glob-like creature named Mitty, did not turn to be so lucky.

On the other hand, Reg has regained the slightest memory of his past, wherein he saw himself in front of Lyza's grave, prompting him to wonder if he had perhaps buried Riko's mother in his forgotten past.

And while all this was happening, Mitty has managed to crawl up the bed to take a closer look at the still unconscious Riko, with what suspiciously looked like traces of recognition in its eyes.

What could Mitty have seen in Riko that triggered such a reaction? Could Riko be in danger with the glob-like creature sticking so close to her? Could Mitty be someone who knew Riko from when it still had its humanity? Could Mitty, perhaps, even be the mysterious Lyza herself?

The upcoming penultimate episode, aptly titled "The True Nature of the Curse," seems to hold some significant answers to the questions that have been thrown in the air since the series began.

"Made in Abyss" airs on Fridays at 9:30 p.m. JST on AT-X and late night at 1:40 a.m. JST on Tokyo MX. Information on other broadcast schedules and online resources can be found on the series' official site. Episodes are also available for regions outside Japan via Amazon Prime's Anime Strike service.
