Madonna Says New 'Devil Prays' Song is About Drugs; 'People Take Drugs to Connect to God'
Madonna recently opened up about experimenting with drugs and why she believes that for many people, using drugs is an attempt to connect closer to God.
The 56-year-old iconic singer, widely dubbed the "Queen of Pop," is gearing up for the release of her forthcoming album and in one particular song entitled "Devil Prays," she sings about drug use being somewhat of a spiritual yet illusory experience.
"It's about how people take drugs to connect to God or to a higher level of consciousness," she told magician David Blaine for Interview magazine. "I keep saying 'Plugging into the matrix.' If you get high, you can do that, which is why a lot of people drop acid or do drugs, because they want to get closer to God."
Madonna also acknowledged her own dabbling into drugs in the past and said she has "tried everything once."
" ... That's the illusion of drugs, because they give you the illusion of getting closer to God, but ultimately they kill you," she said. "They destroy you. I mean, I tried everything once, but as soon as I was high, I spent my time drinking tons of water to get it out of my system. As soon as I was high, I was obsessed with flushing it out of me. I was like, 'Okay, I'm done now.'"
The untitled album is slated to be released two years after she dropped her platinum-selling album "MDNA." The album explores hard partying and it topped the Billboard 200 chart.
In 2012 the "Like A Virgin" singer came under fire following the release of her 12th studio album, which is a play on the drug MDMA, widely referred to as ecstasy or Molly.
During an appearance at Miami's Ultra Music Festival, Madonna made a reference to this same drug and was heavily criticized for what many perceived to be her glamorization of drug use.
"Very classy there madonna ... such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra … quite the f'n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY!" acclaimed music producer Joel Zimmerman (Deadmau5) wrote in a Facebook post.
Madonna hit back at criticism and insisted that she does not condone drug use.
"From one mouse to another. I don't support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called 'Have You Seen Molly' written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my last album ..." she wrote in a Twitter post.
