'Mallrats 2' News: Kevin Smith Says Shooting Starts in May 2016

Kevin Smith is at it again. After he recently announced that the third installment of "Clerks" will start production in spring, he also confirmed that he is planning to do a sequel to his 1995 movie "Mallrats." It has been 20 years since the first movie was shown.

He made the announcement during an interview in a morning radio show.

"Yeah, that's what we're working on. It's half a script right now, and we're pulling our loot together. We've got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we're going to be shooting," the filmmaker said.

"Pulling our loot together" is another term for raising funds for the movie's production. Judging by his announcement, he seems confident enough that he will be able to raise enough by his target production date.

Smith has not shared any plot details of the sequel nor its casting. It's not clear if any of the stars from the first film will be returning. "Mallrats" starred Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannon Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith. Smith played the character Silent Bob. The film was classified as a romantic comedy and was part of Smith's "View Askewniverse" series of films. It only earned $2.1 million dollars in the box office but created a cult following of sorts for Smith and his movies.

Smith continued collaborating with some of the stars in the first movie. Some of the stars he has worked with went on to become big stars in their own right such as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

According to a report in Variety, Smith's going to be busy for the next two years. He is currently preparing for production of "Clerks 3," then "Hit Somebody" and then "Moose Jaws." He is also working on a movie with Johnny Depp called "Yoga Hosers."
