'Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again' Trailer Hints at Donna's Death, Teases Cher's Grandmother Role

The first trailer for "Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again" has been released, and fans have got a lot of feelings about it.

The trailer opens with Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) welcoming back Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) to the Greek island of Kalokairi. She tells them that she is pregnant and that she does not know how she will be able to raise the child alone. Rosie then begins to recount how Donna (Meryl Streep) managed to be a single mom herself.

However, the first few scenes alone have left fans worried. First of all, Sophie comments on how she is about to raise her child by herself, which begs the question: Where is Donna? Rosie also refers to Donna in the past tense.

"Your mother was the bravest person we ever met," she says. Later in the trailer, Sophie also says that she has "never felt closer" to Donna.

And, while Streep does make many appearances in the trailer, they all seem to be flashback scenes. Lily James also brings life to Donna in the flashbacks, who first moved to the island when she was much younger. Her romances with three men, first introduced in their older years in 2008's "Mamma Mia!" are also featured. Of particular note is her affair with a young Sam (Jeremy Irvine), whom fans know was engaged to another woman when he and Donna dated.

All three of Sophie's potential fathers are also in the film. Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgard, and Colin Firth all return as Sam, Bill, and Harry, respectively. The trailer also teases a lot of musical performances, featuring songs by ABBA.

In the end, the party is interrupted by the arrival of Sophie's grandmother, played by Cher. This has confused some fans because Donna mentioned in "Mamma Mia!" that her mother is dead.

All these questions will be answered when the sequel, which Seyfried promises to be "better than the original," premieres on July 20.
