Man of Steel: Laurence Fishburne Joins Cast of Superman
Laurence Fishburne will join the “Man of Steel” cast as the boss of Lois Lane and Clark Kent.
The “Matrix” star was selected to play the stern Editor-in-Chief of the “Daily Planet” newspaper, Perry White, according to Entertainment Weekly. Fishburne will be the first black actor to play White throughout the various interpretations of the film, cartoon and television.
In the 2006 film “Superman Returns” Frank Langella was cast as White, while actor Jackie Cooper played the EIC in the “Superman” films that featured Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent.
The demanding Editor-in-Chief character was created over 70 years ago on “The Adventures of Superman” radio series before making his way onto the seventh issue of the “Superman” comic, The Los Angeles Times reports.
The most recent actor to take on the role of White is also nominated for an Emmy award after his performance in HBO’s “Thurgood” as Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall. He also recently ended a stint as Christopher Meloni on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
Fishburne was the recipient of a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in the play “Two Trains Running” close to 10 years ago and previously received an Emmy Award for his performance in “Tribeca.”
Aside from Fishburne, the “Man of Steel” film will have an all-star cast featuring Henry Cavill as Clark Kent and Amy Adams as reporter Lois Lane. Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent while Diane Lane will play his wife Martha.
Although much of the cast seems to be complete, Warner Bros has yet to announce which actor will play photographer Jimmy Olsen.
The film will be directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan, who is currently working on “The Dark Knight Rises” batman film. The “Man of Steel” is slated for a 2013 release.
