Man Robs Choir Members During Practice

A group of singers at choir practice were the target of an armed robbery while they sang the praises of Jesus.

Investigators say a man armed with a shotgun robbed the choir group at St. James United Methodist Church in Goose Creek, South Carolina which is northwest of Charleston Wednesday night.

One of the victims told police that the suspect gained access to the church from an unlocked door and pointed a shotgun towards the choir area. Police stated that the suspect then told the choir to get on the floor and to "keep your heads down, I'll blow your head off," according to WCSC.

According to authorities, the suspect continued to demand everyone's wallets and purses while threatening them with the shotgun.

Dorothy Causey, a 77-year-old church member for 28 years told The Post and Courier that, "I watched the man and he had a gun. The first thing that was going through my mind is that somebody is playing a prank, but when he raised the shotgun, we all knew it was for real."

Causey explained that the suspect took more than just money wallets and keys from the choir members. It was their peace of mind and feeling of safety while they praise the Lord in church.

"They are so desperate, they are holding up people in church," she said. "I don't think it has anything to do with the economy. If he had asked our pastor for help, it would have been provided. But he didn't choose to go that way."

Causey said the choir has practiced every Wednesday at the church for years, and despite what happened the choir will continue to practice but at a different location, as reported by WCSC.

Causey stated that she and the other choir members were still trying to come to terms with what happened, but was thankful no one was hurt.

"I just thank the Lord that we were spared and he didn't kill anybody. We have to depend on the Lord at times like this."
