Man Who Awoke Moments Before Embalming Passes Away - 'He Fought the Good Fight,' Daughter Says

Walter Williams has died two weeks after crating headlines by waking up in a body bag, preparing to be embalmed. His family says they are glad they had extra time with him and are glad he is now at peace.

Williams, 78, was pronounced dead two weeks ago at a hospital in Mississippi and transported to a local funeral home for embalming and burial. However, when officials began preparing for the embalming, they heard a noise and saw movement of the body bag containing Williams. When they opened it, they were astonished to see that he was very much alive and immediately called an ambulance to take him back to the hospital.

"I asked the coroner what happened, and the only thing he could say is that it's a miracle," Sheriff Willie March told WAPT News at the time of the event.

Mary Williams, Walter's daughter, told the press how much it meant to be able to share her father's story with the world and thanked the public for all of their support.

"We really want to thank everyone worldwide for all the prayers and the strength we felt through those prayers," Mary told the Clarion Ledger. "You'd be surprised how many people this has touched in more ways than we can ever put our hands on. This is a testimony that will live longer than we will."

Walter, a Christian, told his family that he was ready to be with the Lord whenever the time came.

"When he was in St. Dominic's Hospital, he told us, 'It's all up in the Lord's hands. Whatever the Lord says, I'm willing to do. Y'all just accept it,'" daughter Gracie said.

"We're at peace," Mary added. "We know he has fought the good fight. His sister was able to make it into town, and he got to see his last grandchild and all of his grandkids. That was a blessing."
