Manny Ramirez: Latest Celebrity Accused of Domestic Violence
Retired baseball slugger Manny Ramirez, 39, known for his many years of power hitting with the Boston Red Sox, is the latest in a long line of famous athletes and celebrities to be accused of or charged with domestic violence.
Ramirez was arrested in Florida Monday night and was released Tuesday from the Broward County jail in Fort Lauderdale after posting bail of $2, 500.
At Tuesday’s arraignment, Judge Jon Hurley also prohibited Ramirez from approaching his wife, Juliana, who had called the police on the claim that her husband had hit her in the face.

A fearsome hitter during his eight year stint with the Red Sox, Ramirez was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and later picked up on waivers by the Chicago White Sox. He went on to end his career with Tampa Bay in April of this year, a retirement which was forced on the perennial All-Star Game candidate after it was disclosed that he had tested positive for an illegal performance-enhancing drug.
Ramirez filed notice contesting the results which allowed a second sample to be tested. After the second sample came back as positive, however, he dropped his appeal and informed Major League Baseball of his decision to resign.
Beyond the headlining news of the famous being involved in allegations of domestic violence, this is an issue which stretches across all social backgrounds.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “intimate partner violence result in more than 18.5 million mental health care visits each year.”
And Christians are no exception to this societal concern. The Christian Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, an organization formed to empower Christians by bringing awareness to the issue of domestic abuse within Christian communities, states: “Sadly, religion is NOT a deterrent…there is just as much abuse (spousal, child and sexual abuse) in Christian homes as in non-Christian homes.”
It is CCADA’s belief that, “All persons are made in the image of God and, therefore, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.”
