Marathon Runner Baby: Severe Pain for Runner Turns Out to Be 'Miracle' Baby (VIDEO, PHOTO)
An aspiring marathon runner has given birth to a new baby girl just a day after complaining about unbearable back pain during a two hour intensive training session.
Trish Staine, 33, of Minnesota has admitted she had absolutely no idea she was pregnant before she gave birth on Monday; she had not gained any weight or felt any fetal movement, and her husband has had a vasectomy.
Staine has said from her Duluth hospital room after giving birth: "I said 'no, no, that's impossible'."
She added, "I definitely thought I was done having kids."
Staine and her husband, John, already have a daughter, 7, and a son, 11. She is also stepmother to her husband's three other boys from a previous relationship, who are 17, 19 and 20 years old.
The runner had been training for the Garry Bjorklund half-marathon on June 22, and on Sunday had run about two hours.
She has explained, "I had a sore back Sunday evening. I had taken a hot shower and was dealing with it. Monday morning, I woke up and had more back pain, and as the day went on it got worse. I thought I should go to the ER. I thought I ruptured a disc or pulled a muscle."
However, she tried to continue on with her day as usual and went to support her husband play basketball at lunchtime, before watching her daughter's short play in the afternoon.
But her "pain" would not go away, and when she got home she ran another bath, hoping it would help ease things. But things soon became unbearable, and she called her husband, who in turn called 911 and an ambulance was sent to their residence.
She said, "I felt like I was dying. I didn't know what was going on."
In the emergency room she was examined and told that a fetal heartbeat had been detected. A stunned Staine was then rushed to the delivery room and she gave birth at about 3.25 p.m. local time Monday. Her newborn baby girl was born healthy about five weeks premature, and weighed in at 6 pounds, 6 ounces.
They have named their daughter Mira, which they say is short for Miracle.
