Mark Wahlberg Apologizes for Criticizing 9/11 Victims Reactions: I Could Have Saved Them
Actor Mark Wahlberg has apologized for making comments about 9/11 that many have found offensive and inappropriate, although fans sympathized with the actors intentions.
Initially, the action movie actor proclaimed that if he had been on one of the planes involved in 9/11 that he would have done something to stop the attack. “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did,” Wahlberg told Men’s Journal.
Wahlberg added, “There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’"
However the actor treated the topic with an air of lightness that many others didn’t appreciate. The comments were sparked by Wahlberg’s story about nearly missing fate by changing his flight. The actor claims that he was originally scheduled to fly on one of the planes involved in 9/11, however he changed his flight in order to catch the Toronto Film Festival instead.
Wahlberg later apologized to TMZ about his comments. “To suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible,” he said. "To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with."
Fan supported Wahlberg, arguing that it was obvious his intentions were not to offend. “Everyone knows his intentions were not to upset anyone. He was AFTER ALL SUPPOSED to be on that flight,” Babydoll0630 wrote on the TMZ blog.
Jim in Cali sympathized with the actor. “I think I understand what Mark is trying to say but you just can't go there and not have it portrayed as mocking the victims,” he said.
Elloria described the actors response as one mixed with anger and emotion. “You know...He just said what millions of others are and have said about this. Everyone is highly emotional about that day. She believes that people were just mad that something this bad could have happened to us.”
“We all wanted to go find these guys and do what others didn't,” she remarked.
