'Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite' Early Reviews: Apart From Looks, New Game Can Be Considered a Classic

Early reviews for "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite" are already out, and most agree on one conclusion. Despite the puzzling decision to change the look of the series, this new team-based fighter is still a worthy addition to the franchise.

Fans of the "Marvel vs Capcom" team fighting franchise have been looking forward to "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite" since it was teased, and the gameplay of this new iteration will not disappoint new players and veterans alike.

The visuals of the game, however, is another matter entirely.

Once one gets past the distractingly stiff style of the game, there's a lot of meat to the deep gameplay mechanics of the new title. The addition of the power stones added an element of surprise that can tip the balance of the match up to the very last moment, while the tried-and-true tag mechanics of the franchise remains consistently deep and satisfying.

The overall character design, though, could use some work. The studio behind "Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite" opted to ditch the stylized, comic book design of earlier games in favor of a more realistic, cinematic style. The results are mixed, as IGN notes.

Some characters are highly stylized, like X from the "Megaman" series, while those from Marvel's side seem too photorealistic when placed side by side. The realistic lighting and photographic blur effects don't do some of the simpler models any favors, either.

Visual gripes aside, the six Infinity Stones give a line-up a lot of flexibility by adding two levels of power, as Polygon reviewed. These special moves do everything from pulling an enemy close to resurrecting a defeated character, making them extremely useful in specific situations.

"Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite" currently has a score of 76 on Metacritic for the PlayStation 4 version, and a more generous 82 for the Xbox One release.

The video below shows how the heroes from both Marvel and Capcom universes come together against an imminent threat. The game is out now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam.
