Matt Damon Confirms He's Starring in New 'Bourne' Movie Slated for Release in 2016

Matt Damon has won fans all around the world for his portrayal of sensitive and intelligent characters in movies such as "Good Will Hunting."But things started to look up for the actor when he took on the role of Jason Bourne in 2002's "The Bourne Identity," which firmly cemented his status as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood. This was followed by two more Bourne movies in 2004 and 2007, before laying low on the action films until 2013's "Elysium."

Now, Damon can be seen in this month's "Interstellar," and it looks like there will be another Bourne film on the horizon as he recently confirmed that the follow-up to 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum" is happening two years from now.

In an interview with E! News at an event in which the actor and his close friend Ben Affleck celebrated season 4 of their HBO series "Project Greenlight," Affleck made the big revelation when they were asked who would win in a fight, Batman or Jason Bourne. Affleck is set to star as Batman in the highly anticipated "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice" which is set for release in 2016.

"Well, Matt's going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I've just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness," Affleck said.

When asked for clarification, Damon responded, "Yes, next year. It'll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes."

Greengrass directed "The Bourne Supremacy" and "The Bourne Ultimatum," the second and the third films in the series. Neither Greengrass nor Damon returned for the fourth most recent film in the series, 2012's "The Bourne Legacy," which saw Jeremy Renner playing the lead character.

In previous interviews with CNBC, Damon said that he liked the way his character's storyline ended in the third film but would love to know what the future holds for Jason Bourne.

"It felt like such a good way to end it the last time," said Damon. "But having said that, I love that character and I'd love to see what happened to him."

The upcoming Bourne film, which does not have an official title at the moment, is slated to be in theaters on July 15, 2016.
