Mayweather vs Pacquiao Fight Tickets, News and Details
After Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced last Friday that the "Fight of the Century" between him and Manny Pacquiao was happening on May 2, boxing and sports enthusiasts have been rejoicing about the good news. The fight is happening after more than five years of repeated calls for the two "pound-for-pound" fighters to square off in the ring, according to ESPN.
"The Fight of the Century" is scheduled on May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both fighters have fought their previous fights in this same venue. May 2 also coincides with the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend, which a report on Telegraph says is "traditionally one of the huge pay per view weekends for boxing."
Since the announcement, tickets have been available through online ticketing sites such as GoEvent Tickets and Ticket Network, among others. Ringside Fight tickets as of Feb. 23 are now selling for as high as $21,000 and £23,880 while tickets with hotel accommodations can be as high $23,000. The cheapest tickets are at $4,100 or £3,900.
Hours after the announcement, it was also reported that the MGM Grand website encountered a computer glitch that apparently showed that hotel was fully booked during the fight. The glitch has since been corrected.
The contract for the fight reportedly stipulates that Mayweather gets the bigger profit share in a 60-40 split. The ESPN report also says that the fight may break the record in fight earnings, estimating that it will gross around $400 million. Because Mayweather and Pacquiao were connected to rival cable networks, the report also stated that the deal went through a "brutal negotiation" between Showtime and HBO.
Each fighter spoke to ESPN about the fight.
"I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years. They have waited long enough and they deserve it," Pacquiao said. "It is an honor to be part of this historic event. I dedicate this fight to all the fans who willed this fight to happen and, as always, to bring glory to the Philippines and my fellow Filipinos around the world."
"Boxing fans and sports fans around the world will witness greatness on May 2. I am the best ever, TBE, and this fight will be another opportunity to showcase my skills and do what I do best, which is win," Mayweather said. "Manny is going to try to do what 47 before him failed to do, but he won't be successful. He will be number 48."
