The Medical Assistance Program (MAP) is sending two tons of medical provisions including trauma supplies, analgesics, vital medicines, bandages, and topical ointment to New Orleans via truck. The truck will deliver the Johnson & Johnson International Disaster Module to areas intensely needing medical assistance, such as to the West Jefferson Medical Center, a non-profit community hospital south of New Orleans.
According to Major Dalton Cunningham, divisional commander for the Salvation Army in the Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi Division, the victims of Hurricane Katrina just want basic life sustenance.
Theyre in shock. Everything theyve worked for all of their lives is gone.
In addition to supplying medical supplies, MAP is sending an assessment team out today to follow shipments of infant formula and adult liquid nutrition to their destinations. Upon arrival at the target areas, the assessment team will be looking for other organizations to help in the relief efforts and the distribution of supplies.
The first shipment of MAP medical supplies were shipped Wednesday afternoon and delivered by Operation Blessing. The first goods included infant formula and personal hygiene products. These supplies are currently being distributed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
This is a disaster of catastrophic magnitude like none weve seen before, said Michael D. Brown, Department of Homeland Securitys Principal Federal Officer for Hurricane Katrina response and head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It has created challenges that we are working around the clock to address and fix. In the meantime, we continue life-saving and sustaining efforts and directing resources to those with the most urgent needs.
MAP is currently working alongside other Christian relief organizations to help hurricane victims, including the Salvation Army and North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
