Megan Hilty 'Smashes' Body Standards

New series "Smash" actress Megan Hilty has opened up about being a "normal" sized woman on television.

"I'm just not normally what you see on television, which is something that I really appreciate about what NBC's done in casting me," explained the actress according to Access Hollywood Live.

"Smash" premiered on the network Monday and has seen positive ratings. Hilty portrays Ivy Lynn who is battling to win the part of Marilyn Monroe in a new musical against rival Karen Cartwright, portrayed by actress Katherine McPhee.

Hilty continued, "I'm very, very thankful that they're casting people with normal figures."

Of her costumes dressing as Marilyn Monroe in the dramatic show, the 30-year-old revealed that imitating the iconic curvy actress was simple.

"There is no padding, that's what you get for casting someone with a real body on TV," said the actress. "No padding involved, but the wig kind of makes Marilyn, I think. I really felt it once the hair was right."

The actress also talked about the future of the show as her character competes for work while in a romantic relationship.

"It's much more than trying to get a job," Hilty said of the plot on "Smash." "It's a real relationship and it's a very unconventional one, but you've got to tune in to see where that goes."

On portraying Ivy, Hilty said she is a lot like her character during the recent Television Critics Association Press Tour.

"Very quickly you'll see her relationships, her family life and the emotional roller coaster that is in store for Ivy that explains a lot about her behavior," said Hilty. "We actually reshot a scene a couple times [from the pilot] because we didn't know what to give away about my mother, but you'll find out fairly quickly how many family feels about my career and choice and all of that."

"Smash" airs Mondays on NBC at 10 p.m. EST.
