Melania Trump returns as first lady: 4 things to know about her life, marriage and more

Marriage

Melania first met future husband Donald Trump at a 1998 New York Fashion Week party hosted by Paolo Zampolli, founder of the ID Models management agency. As Harper’s Bazaar reported in 2016, the first lady recalled that Trump wanted her number, but she declined to give it, as he was on a date with another woman.

At the time, the real estate mogul was separated from his second wife, Marla Maples, and he had brought another woman with him to the party.

"I said, 'I am not giving you my number; you give me yours, and I will call you,’” Melania recalled. “I wanted to see what kind of number he would give me—if it was a business number, what is this? I'm not doing business with you."

Trump provided Melania with all of his numbers, including those for his office, Mar-a-Lago and his home in New York. Since she had to travel to the Caribbean for a photo shoot, she called Trump a few days later. For their first date, Trump took Melania to Moomba in New York.

According to Today, the couple broke up in 2000, only to eventually resume dating. After attending the Met Gala together in 2004, Trump used the event as a backdrop to propose. The couple married in 2005, exchanging vows in Palm Beach, Florida, and holding the reception at the Mar-a-Lago estate.

In an interview with Larry King after the wedding, Melania described the event as “fantastic,” saying that she was not nervous at all because the pair had been in a relationship for a while, and she knew it was time.

“We know what kind of relationship we have, and I don’t think I should be scared of anything,” she told King.

The couple has one son, Barron, born on March 20, 2006. Melania is also a stepmother to Trump’s four children from his two previous marriages.
