While the first lady typically avoided sharing her political views during her husband’s presidential run, Melania revealed in a memoir published last month that she is pro-choice. Despite identifying as Catholic, she stated that she believes it’s “imperative” for women to have “autonomy” when making decisions about whether to have children.

“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” Melania wrote.

“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life.”

Various pro-life advocates expressed disappointment over her comments, with Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins saying at the time that the first lady missed an opportunity to serve as a role model for women.

Christian podcaster Allie Beth Stuckey also commented, asserting that her views on abortion are “indistinguishable” from Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ position.
