Melissa McCarthy Fights Back Over Weight Comments
Melissa McCarthy blasted critics of her weight including the off-color review posted by the New York Observer's Rex Reed in a recent interview.
This past February, Reed reviewed McCarthy's comedy film "Identity Thief" where he referred to the actress as "tractor-sized" and a "female hippo."
The reporter also penned that McCarthy is "a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success," before his comments incensed readers.
Although Reed's comments sparked strong reactions, McCarthy did not respond to the article until now.
"Really? Why would someone O.K. that," McCarthy asked during an interview with The New York Times.
The 42-year-old actress fortunately did not let Reed's harsh critiques bring her down, but instead, allowed the words to remind her of the obstacles she has overcome.
"I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate," McCarthy continued, according to the Times. "I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot. I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."
McCarthy has received an Emmy Award for her role on the television series "Mike & Molly," in addition to an Oscar nomination for the film "Bridesmaids."
Meanwhile, McCarthy's new film "The Heat" hits theaters on June 28. The comedy also stars Sandra Bullock, "Saturday Night Live" star Taran Killam, and Marlon Wayans.
The busy actress is also working on the film "Tammy" alongside her husband Ben Falcone. The comedy will mark her directorial debut and follows a down-and-out woman who embarks on a road trip with her alcoholic grandmother.
"They both have their issues they're not acknowledging and they're leaving town without knowing where they're going," said McCarthy while speaking to Entertainment Weekly. "I love that there's something that happens in a car with people where all bets are off. You're off your rhythm, off your schedule, you're forced to be completely adaptable or die."
"Tammy" stars McCarthy, Susan Sarandon as well as Kathy Bates, and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 2, 2014.
