Mercy Ships Honored at Texas State Capital
A global charity operating a growing fleet of hospital ships was honored at the Texas State Capital on Monday for its efforts over the past 27 years
A global charity operating a growing fleet of hospital ships was honored at the Texas State Capital on Monday for its efforts over the past 27 years to deliver free world-class health care to more than 5.5 million people around the world.
After proclaiming Mar. 21 as Mercy Ships Day, State Representative Dan Flynn further commended Garden Valley, Tex.-based Mercy Ships for their charitable works during the opening session of the House of Representatives. A delegation from Mercy Ships, including Founder/President Don Stephens, was joined by Mercy Ships International Board member A.W. Riter as well as Gaylord Huey.
According to Mercy Ships, Stephens was also named Pastor of the Day in the State Senate where he and the organization were honored during the opening of the session by Senator Bob Deuell.

Later in the day, the Mercy Ships delegation met with Gov. Rick Perry who said he was “impressed by the work Mercy Ships is doing around the world.”
“The many US volunteers serving with Mercy Ships help to bring the face of love in action to those developing nations,” Perry told the delegation.
Currently, Mercy Ships is the leader in using a growing fleet of hospital ships to deliver free world-class healthcare services to the poor. With three hospital ships and offices in 17 countries, Mercy Ships has visited more than 500 ports in over 50 developing nations.
Mercy Ships has also performed more than two million services, with a value of $250 million (USD) since the organization’s founding in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens. These services include treating more than 300,000 people in village clinics, performing 18,000 surgeries, 110,000 dental treatments and completing close to 350 construction and agriculture projects, including schools, clinics, orphanages and water wells.
Each year more than 2,400 career and short-term volunteers serve with Mercy Ships.
