Internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Michael W. Smith has been nominated by the White House to serve a two-year term as a member of the Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation.
Internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter Michael W. Smith has been nominated by the White House to serve a two-year term as a member of the Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation. The nomination was made in a personal announcement released by the White House in December.
Smith joins a group of 18 others on the Council, which includes personalities such as actress Hilary Duff and actor Steven Baldwin.
Established by President George W. Bush in January of 2003, the Council on Service and Civic Participation is purposed to promote volunteer service and civic participation in American society by working to support the efforts of local non-profits and volunteer organizations as well as encourage greater public access to information about existing volunteer opportunities.
In other news, Smith is currently preparing for the release of his motion picture debut in Provident Films The Second Chance, which stars Smith as a pastor sent from a wealthy church to serve an inner-city congregation. Directed and co-written by Christian music industry veteran Steve Taylor, The Second Chance will be distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing under the Triumph Films banner on Feb. 17, 2006.
