Michelle Obama Debuts Haircut, New Twitter Account on Birthday

Michelle Obama, first lady of the United States of America, recently celebrated her 49th birthday by creating a Twitter account and premiering a new hairstyle.

Obama turned 49 on Thursday and joined the world of Twitter, gaining over 78,000 followers in one day. While the social media account was not operated by Obama herself upon its creation, the new Twitter handle @FLOTUS informed people that she will also write her own messages.

"The @FLOTUS Office is now on @twitter & will post updates & pics. When it's her, she'll sign -mo. PS: RT to wish Mrs. Obama a #HappyBirthday," the first message from Obama's Twitter account read.

Obama's account also informed followers that she recently met with the inaugural citizen co-chair and posted an image of the first lady with a new hairstyle featuring bangs.

"The First Lady just met with inaugural citizen co-chair David Hall ahead of #MLKDay of Service," the photograph caption stated.

While Obama's Twitter followers are steadily increasing, many people took notice of her new hairstyle. Naya Rivera, "Glee" actress and singer, made sure to comment on the first lady's new bangs before her performance for the first family.

"Happy birthday @FLOTUS Michelle Obama. Love the bangs," Rivera tweeted. "So excited to perform for you this weekend in DC!"

After several news outlets provided coverage of the first lady's new hairstyle, some people questioned why it was receiving so much attention.

"She said "mommy, why would Michelle Obama getting her bangs cut be on the news," one mother tweeted about an experience with her daughter. "Isn't there other stuff going on and she's eight!"

However, another person was not ashamed to express their excitement about Obama's new blunt bangs.

"I feel so excited and hopeful about everything today," the person tweeted. "Thanks, Michelle Obama's new bangs."

Although the first lady has yet to comment about her new hairstyle, she did write a personal message on Twitter to thank supporters for wishing her a happy birthday while promoting a day of service on the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr holiday.

"Thanks for the warm welcome & birthday wishes! Join me and Barack for #MLKDay of Service this Saturday," Obama tweeted. "Sign up: http://www.2013pic.org/service –mo."
