Michelle Obama Responds to Oscars Backlash
Michelle Obama addressed the uproar her presentation at this year's Oscar Awards caused by her appearance on Friday.
The First Lady presented the Oscar Award for Best Film last month via satellite, causing many to critique the appearance as inappropriate.
Despite the backlash, Mrs. Obama appeared on the Today show explaining that people's reactions were a natural part of life.
"That's just the nature of life," said the First Lady. "I mean, we live in a time when there are bloggers and tweeters and 24-hour news and everyone has a voice in this town square, and it's a big one."
Obama, who is currently wrapping up a national tour promoting her "Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign, continued to explain that it is impossible to please everyone.
"It's a part of the culture," added the wife of President Barack Obama. "It's not really about me, I just happen to be in the public eye and along with everybody else in the public eye, you're subject to conversation, opinion and all that sort of stuff. There's nothing new about that."
Last week, a spokeswoman for the First Lady explained that the Academy had approached Mrs. Obama about presenting at the Oscars.
"As a movie lover, she was honored to present the award and celebrate the artists who inspire us all," the representative stated to The Washington Post. "Especially our young people, with their passion, skill and imagination."
However, critics such as conservative journalist Michelle Malkin took issue with the First Lady's Oscars appearance.
"Forget separation of church and state- we need separation of Hollywood and state," Malkin posted to Twitter.
"For anyone who doubted the Hollywood-Washington nexus; always happy to see Michelle Obama, but somehow, here, it's the wrong message," movies editor Richard Brody posted to Twitter.
Alternately, many others heralded Obama's presentation as "amazing," and the First Lady even made some of the night's Best-Dressed list with her Naeem Khan gown.
