Michelle Obama Reveals Why She Restricts Facebook For Her Daughters
Michelle Obama, the first lady of the United States, recently spoke up about the Facebook restrictions that she has for her daughters within her household.
Michelle and President Barack Obama have two daughters; Sasha, 12 and Malia, 15. Mrs. Obama recently spoke up about the rules she has set for her daughters on the popular social media website.
While Sasha is not allowed to have any Facebook access, Malia has limited access to the popular website. Mrs. Obama explained her position on the matter.
"I still am not a big believer in Facebook for young people … particularly for them, because they're in the public eye," Mrs Obama said on ABC's 20/20. "Some of it's stuff they don't need to see and be a part of … So we try to protect them from too much of the public voice."
She previously spoke about the rules she has set to prepare her children for higher education.
"I give them as long a leash as they can handle. What I tell my kids is, I'm preparing you for college and for life," she told Parade magazine recently. "So, having independence, knowing how to set your own boundaries, figuring out how to make that balance. We still have screen time rules."
Still, the first lady admitted that she is not moving too quickly in the college search for her daughter.
"You know, I am really trying to tone that way down," she told Parade. "Because kids are under unreasonable pressure, and it can destroy a high school experience."
The Obamas have spoken about raising their children in the past, with Mrs. Obama even revealing that she gives her daughters some freedom while monitoring their phone usage.
"I give my daughter at this age, I give her a long rope," Mrs. Obama said of daughter Malia in a "Nightline" interview last year. "And there is monitoring because we have rules but monitoring may be you never know when I'm going to walk into your room and I'm going to ask you 'who are you talking to and are you talking about school work?'"
