HockeyApp Acquired By Microsoft And Its Developer Tools for Mobile
Microsoft has recently taken ownership of HockeyApp and its suite of developer tools, app distribution services and mobile app crash analytics to support its Android and iOS devices.
The announcement was first made in a post on HockeyApp's official website on Thursday by co-founders Andreas Linde, Thomas Dohmke, Michael Simmons and Stefan Haubold. They wrote that with the new acquisition, they have a "tremendous opportunity to developers with the best app developments tools and users with the best app experiences."
They wrote, "Our indie spirit will continue on at Microsoft and we're more excited than ever about the future of HockeyApp."
HockeyApp's technology boasts a beta distribution platform, live crash reports, user feedback tools and test analysis and while the terms of the deal have not been disclosed to the public, it's likely that Microsoft is planning to make full use of HockeyApp's skills and work them in to their devices.
HockeyApp, which was founded in 2011 out of Stuttgart, Germany, has been expanding over the years in partnership with Windows Phone and Android. The services they offered helps develops test and distribute their applications for mobiles and desktops, all the while gaining the best and fastest feedback on the bugs that plagued their devices.
Microsoft's developers division corporate vice president Sivaramakrishnan Somasegar stated in a blog post that they plan to utilize and integrate all the technology that HockeyApp has to offer. They will add the technology to their Application Insights in Visual Studio Online, which is an application that offers a view on the device's usage, available and performance.
HockeyApp is not Microsoft's first mobile-focused purchase as they also bought out mobile email app provider Acompli for their iOS and Android devices, which was for the expansion and improvement of the Microsoft Outlook's performance on non-Windows platforms.
