Microsoft Windows 10 Free Upgrade Ending on July 29, 2016
All good things must come to an end and this is the case with Microsoft's offer for a free upgrade to its latest version of its operating system, Windows 10. The end in sight is July 29, 2016 which the company confirmed through their official Windows blog last May 5. Through the blog, the company's Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Windows and Device Group said that the company offering its latest version of the OS for free was a first for the company and this allowed many people to get their copy of the latest software on their devices. He also said that the time for such offer is already "running out."
According to him, if users fail to upgrade before the July 29 deadline, they will only be able to get Windows 10 on a new device or if they purchase a full version of Windows 10 Home which set one back by $119. Windows 10 Pro on the other hand will cost $199. This means that those who are using the pro versions of Windows 7 and 8.1 will lose their free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro if they do it past the deadline.
The free upgrade offer was made available for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users who have existing devices. Notably, the end of the free upgrade also means that users will no longer be bothered with "Get Window 10" notifications that pop up on their devices. According to a report in The Verge, Microsoft is set to disable the app that sends out these notifications and eventually remove it from devices worldwide after July 29.
Microsoft is claiming that their free upgrade program, their first time to try such an approach, was a success, with over 300 million PCs running on Windows 10 within 10 months after the new OS was released, according to another report in Forbes. Windows 10 was launched in January 2015 and boasted a new web browser, Universal apps and a new Cortana.
