Miguel Cotto Next Fight Latest News: Freddie Roach discusses apprehension about fighting Gennady Golovkin
Like a good chunk of boxing spectators, renowned trainer Freddie Roach likes the idea of his fighter Miguel Cotto facing undefeated knock out artist Gennady Golovkin.
Cotto will first be facing former world light middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, in what is billed as a super fight for the classic "Mexico vs. Puerto Rico" rivalry in boxing. The fight will take place on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
The 35-year old Cotto will be putting his WBC, Lineal and Ring Magazine titles on the line.
For his part, Golovkin has managed to climb his way up to mainstream recognition through the highlight reel knockout victories he has scored. Holding an immaculate slate of 34-0 with 31 victories by knockout, "GGG's" most recent accomplishment was through an eighth round stoppage victory against Canada's David Lemieux in October at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
While Golovkin has not yet named who his next opponent will be, Roach has once again opened up the possibility of Cotto facing Golovkin in the near future. This time, he talked about the one apprehension they have.
"It's a big fight out there, of course," Roach said in an interview with Fight Hub. "The thing is, we just don't know if Golovkin can draw a pay-per-view that well yet. I think his last fight didn't do that well but hopefully with that match-up [against Cotto], they would do well."
"It's tough to fight Golovkin for free," he continued. "He's a tough fight. I know he's a good fighter but if you fight a guy like that, you want to get for a fight like that. But it could happen, for sure."
As early as October, Roach had already been bringing up the idea of Cotto fighting Golovkin. Back then; his main concern was how the negotiations for the fight will come about.
"It's a big fight and so forth, but the thing is, there's a lot of negotiations to go on after that," Roach said in an October interview with Fight Hub. "It's just not going to happen automatically."
