Roach has often questioned Alvarez's dedication to the sport of boxing. In an October interview with Fight Hub through a report by Bad Left Hook, the seven-time Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year spoke about their Mexican opponent.

"I have a lot of insight in his training camps. He trained in my gym for three fights and I don't think he's the most dedicated guy in the world," Roach said of Alvarez. "And I think I have a guy that is dedicated and will do anything to win."

With only two weeks left until fight night, both camps are continuously preparing for the task ahead. However, Roach again reiterated his opinions on Alvarez's work ethic, this time, comparing him to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

"I own Wild Card West, and I do get reports everyday, and I do get reports when people show up and don't show up," Roach said in an interview with Seconds Out. "He's like Chavez a little bit, he didn't show up everyday."

"That alone tells me a lot," he continued.

Roach had previously worked with Chavez Jr., where the two had a strained working relationship. According to Roach, his main problem was Chavez not attending the practice sessions they have set beforehand.

In a January 2014 interview with PBInsider videos, the Mexican fighter declared his intent to work with Roach once again, in which the trainer had this to say:

"The first day you miss (training) is the first day I quit," Roach said. "He missed the first day."
