Miley Cyrus Weight Gain Debate: Fans Flood Twitter to Blast Irresponsible Media

Miley Cyrus has been a topic of conversation the last couple of days due to an apparent slight weight gain leading some in the media world to deem her "fat." The media response has outraged parents, teenagers, women, and most importantly, Cyrus who fired back on Twitter.

The singer posted a picture of a very thin sickly woman on her Twitter and wrote, "By calling girls like me fat, this is what you’re doing to other people.”

She continued, “I love MYSELF & if you could say the same… I don’t wanna be shaped like a girl I LOVE being shaped like a WOMAN & trust me ladies your man won’t mind either.”

The singer, who has always been relatively thin has seemingly put on a few pounds and now critics are saying she has lost control of her body, according to ABC.

Pop stars like Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey have been previous targets of media scrutiny in the last couple of years because of their weight. Now with the younger Cyrus, people are beginning to ask, "When is enough, enough?"

Many fans are outraged at the media's attitude toward women, and feel the pressures of looking "perfect" are absolutely ridiculous.

The Christian Post asked readers to sound off on the subject, and almost everyone blasted the way women are treated in the media and stood up for the young singer regardless of how they feel about her music.

Music magazine owner of Broken Records, Scott Vollweiler said, "It's terrible. Our culture used to be the heavier you are, the richer you are and the happier you are too. Even in the twentieth century, Marilyn Monroe, a huge sex symbol, was a size 10/12...gorgeous then, fat now. Terrible."

Student Doug Adams couldn't fathom the negative comments toward Cyrus. "Well first off she’s not even fat...she still looks just as good as she did before and it’s kind of sad that the media would even have the time to bring something like this up. Look at Mariah Carey she was never a small girl...why are we even having this conversation?"

Musician Michael Giordano said, "It's sexist because I rarely ever see anyone complaining when a guy gets fat. So obvious the media and people in general are sexist. For instance, the way they are going crazy about Christina Aguilera. Plus they put photos up that makes them look way worse."

Staten Island Shores reporter Mark Stein thinks celebrity stories like this are distracting to the bigger more important things going on in the world. "Some media focuses on stories that have no impact on our lives, but people buy into it regardless. Who cares if Miley is tacking on pounds? At least we know she's not anorexic or bulemic. Maybe others will finally take notice and understand they don't need a stick figure to be successful and liked. The fact that this is even a story is just more alarming to what this country's priorities are."

Paul Mitchell worker, Samantha Cancilla, spoke about the pressures girls face without having the media hassle non-skinny celebrities rubbing in a view most don't share on true beauty. "Girls are always going to be hard on other girls bc girls are generally hard on themselves about being pretty regardless of the media."

For these commenters and for the countless people around the world struggling with their body image, sometimes the media paints an ugly picture of what they want everyone to think. It is clear from the comments that despite what a mass audience is told, most are able to rationalize and make decisions for themselves.

Miley Cyrus is one person who is not afraid to be herself regardless of whatever controversy she may be involved in. One thing that can be said for sure is, this won't stop her from being successful and talented.
