'Mindhunter' Renewal, Plot News: David Fincher Wants Netflix Drama for Five Seasons
"Mindhunter" has been receiving plenty of raves from critics and viewers. Netflix already granted the show a second season renewal but director David Fincher hopes it can go on for at least five seasons, according to one of the stars.
Holt McCallany, who plays FBI Agent Bill Tench, told Screen Rant that Fincher wants the stories on "Mindhunter" to unfold in five seasons. McCallany is certain Fincher might just get what he wants.
"I believe in his talent, you know," the actor said. "Five seasons of these characters and so I'm hopeful, you know I don't take anything for granted."
"Mindhunter" follows the beginnings of how the FBI started doing serial killer profiling in the 1970s. The show takes cues from the book "Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit" from real-life FBI profiler John Douglas. Jonathan Groff plays FBI Agent Holden Ford, whose character is based on Douglas.
As behavioral scientists, Ford and Tench travel to America's different prisons to interview murderers. They want to get into the minds of serial killers to potentially understand their quirks and triggers.
The FBI agents get more cues from psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) who goes through their recorded interviews to shed light on the killers' remarks and responses. "Mindhunter" also delves into the three main characters' personal lives and the end of season 1 hints one of them might become a psychopath as well.
Fincher confirmed that "Mindhunter" season 2 will tackle the Atlanta child murders. Viewers, however, wondered if the show will ever resolve one serial killer's case hinted but unnamed in every episode of season 1.
Theories abound that this mystery man is the BTK killer who terrorized his victims for almost 30 years. McCallany, however, doesn't think "Mindhunter" will aim to conclude his story because solving cases is not the gist of the series.
"Our journey begins in 1978, are we really going to go up to 2005," the actor told Refinery 29. "These guys don't solve all of their cases. You don't get to solve them all in real life, and you don't get to solve them all in 'Mindhunter.'"
All 10 episodes of "Mindhunter" season 1 are now streaming on Netflix. Joe Penhall is show creator and writer with Fincher and Charlize Theron as executive producers.
