Minnesota Vikings NFL Trade Rumors: Vikings Interested in Lardarius Webb

After signing Tony Jefferson last week, the Baltimore Ravens decided to part ways with Lardarius Webb. But the safety may not be a free agent for long because a team already has him on their radar.

Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press has reported that the Minnesota Vikings are eyeing Webb as a potential fit in secondary. Well, he is certainly versatile enough to play a number roles for the Vikings.

"At 31-years-old the Vikings can sign him for a reasonable amount of money. Minnesota currently has just under $27 million in cap space, therefore signing Webb is not a financial issue. Compared to other available players and their market value, Webb is a smart choice," Dominique Clare of The Viking Age said in his piece.

"Lardarius Webb will also bring his Super Bowl winning experience to the Vikings secondary. That is something the Vikings need in order to get to the next level. The Vikings have excellent talent in place but need a veteran leader like Webb," he continued.

The team already has a solid free safety in Harrison Smith, so why are the Vikings targeting Webb? The answer is simple. Webb actually spent most of his career playing cornerback for the Ravens before he switched to safety last season and he is more than capable of filling the slot cornerback role. That should soften the blow of losing Captain Munnerlyn to the Carolina Panthers.

A number of observers have also noted that Webb can also challenge Andrew Sendejo for the starting strong safety job and play alongside Smith.

The Vikings will have some competition for his signature because the Ravens also want to bring Webb back to Baltimore. Well, he can always return to his former team, but he may be a better fit with the Vikings.

The Ravens selected Webb in the third round of the 2009 draft and he has spent his entire career in Baltimore.
