A missing pregnant woman's ex-boyfriend was indicted for murder and arson Monday after allegedly killing 27-year-old Carly Scott of Maui and torching her SUV to hide evidence of her demise. Steven Capobianco, 24, was the father of Scott's unborn child, and although he says he is innocent, authorities will be working to prove him guilty of second-degree murder.

The indictment in the missing pregnant woman's case came Monday at the Maui Community Correctional Center, where Capobianco was being held for another crime. A copy of the indictment accused the man of causing Scott's death "in an especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel manner, manifesting exceptional depravity," The Associated Press reported.

Scott, who was five months pregnant, disappeared in February of this year and was never found. Police found the Makawao woman's 1997 Toyota 4Runner burned on the north side of the island, and also found her dog in a nearby town, but never found her body. After these events, they determined that her disappearance had been a homicide.

Capobianco has always maintained his innocence. He told Hawaii News Now that he did see his then-girlfriend the night she vanished but did not kill her. Instead, he said she drove him to his pickup truck and began following on the road. After a while, he said he lost sight of her, but assumed she had reached wherever she was headed safely.

Capobianco's bail was set at $2 million. He is currently being held on $500,000 bail for charges including terroristic threatening and carrying prohibited deadly weapons, according to the Associated Press.
