'Mission: Impossible 5' Release Date Delay? Was Production Halted Due to Problematic Ending?

Production for "Mission: Impossible 5," the fifth film of the "Mission: Impossible" series was reportedly stopped by Paramount Pictures recently in order to give director-writer Christopher McQuarrie some time to sort out the film's ending.

According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, their source inside Paramount said that "Chris, Tom and a third person wanted to take a minute to get from what they thought was a good place to a more perfect place." The same report cited another source who said that McQuarrie was "scrambling" to find a good ending. It also noted that it was "unusual and costly" for a big production like this to stop midway considering that its release date is less than five months away.

McQuarrie however quickly countered the report, going on Twitter to poke fun at the Hollywood Reporter story and the existence of a "mystery third writer." He supposedly posted a tweet denying that production was indeed halted, but this was eventually deleted, according to another report in Den of Geek.

Despite these reports, Paramount is reportedly confident that the movie will make its release date of July 31, 2015. When the film was in development in November 2013, the original release date was December 2015. In January 2015, Paramount announced that it will be released earlier to "avoid competition with 'Star Wars' and 'Spectre.'" The film will also be released for IMAX theaters worldwide on the same date.

"Mission: Impossible 5" stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames. These actors will reprise their roles in the "Mission: Impossible" series. New cast members include Sean Harris as the villain, Alec Baldwin and Rebecca Ferguson.

Filming took place in various locations namely Vienna, Austria, Morocco and London.

The last film of the series, "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol" earned a whopping $650 million worldwide in 2011, said to be the highest earnings for the franchise.
