'Mission: Impossible 6' Casting News: 'The Crown' Star Vanessa Kirby Cast in Lead Role
"The Crown" and "Everest" actress Vanessa Kirby has joined the cast of the upcoming movie "Mission: Impossible 6."
According to Variety, Kirby is in final talks for one of the new leads in the next film installment to Paramount and Skydance's "Mission: Impossible" movie franchise starring Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. She will be joining Cruise and other expected returning cast members such as Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner.
Details behind the role the actress will play in the upcoming spy-action movie are scarce at the moment. However, the role is expected to be on the same level as Ferguson's role in the fifth movie of the spy-action film franchise, "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation."
In the past, the female lead roles in the "Mission: Impossible" film franchise has helped in catapulting actresses such as Ferguson and Thandie Newton to leading lady status.
Kirby has recently received acclaim for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth's sister, Princess Margaret, in the Netflix royal drama series "The Crown." She also appeared in movies such as "Me Before You" and "Everest."
Production for "Mission: Impossible 6" is scheduled to commence next month on April 10 in Paris, France. Filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, who also previously served as the director of "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation," will be returning to direct the movie and write its script. His return to the franchise is considered as the first time a director has filmed more than one "Mission: Impossible" movie.
As previously reported, McQuarrie teased that the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" movie will depict an "emotional journey" for Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt.
"I've seen five of these movies and I don't know who Ethan Hunt is," McQuarrie said.
"One movie sort of dealt with his personal life; the other movies are about people speculating what's really going on in Ethan's head. I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it," he continued.
The director also revealed that the movie will not be opening with a big action sequence, a drastic departure from the long-held practice of the previous installments of the franchise.
"Mission: Impossible 6" is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 27, 2018.
