'Mission: Impossible 6' Release Date, Plot News: Director Teases Unexpected Character Returns

After encountering a few delays along the way, the next installment in the "Mission: Impossible" film franchise is scheduled to commence production this spring. Its director, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, has recently spoken about "Mission: Impossible 6" and discussed what the audience can expect from the upcoming spy-action film.

In celebration of the 250th episode of its podcast, Empire Magazine invited McQuarrie to appear in the show, in which the director talked about the latest adventures of Tom Cruise as special agent Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible 6."

"It's going great!" McQuarrie told Empire. "We start shooting on April 10th in Paris. It's a very different Ethan Hunt, I can promise you that," he added.

Cruise and Rebecca Ferguson – who portrayed Ilsa Faust in "Mission: Impossible 5 – Rogue Nation" – will be reprising their roles for the sixth "Mission: Impossible" movie. However, during the interview, McQuarrie also teased that some old characters from the franchise will be returning for the forthcoming film, "including people you would not expect to be back."

McQuarrie also revealed that "Mission: Impossible 6" will not be opening with a big action sequence, breaking a long-held tradition in the entire "Mission: Impossible" film series. "It starts in a very unconventional way," he said. "It does not start with action. That was the hardest pitch of this movie," he added.

It was also revealed that the upcoming movie will depict an "emotional journey" for Cruise's character.

"I've seen five of these movies and I don't know who Ethan Hunt is," he said. "One movie sort of dealt with his personal life; the other movies are about people speculating what's really going on in Ethan's head. I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it," McQuarrie continued.

Filming for "Mission: Impossible 6" was supposed to begin last year. However, the film was reportedly put on hold because of a pay dispute with Cruise. Hence, Paramount had to put the breaks on the next "Mission: Impossible" movie while contract negotiations with Cruise were ongoing. At present, filming is scheduled to kick off this April.

"Mission: Impossible 6" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 27, 2018.
