MLB Trade Rumors 2017: Nationals and White Sox Discussing Possible David Robertson Trade
The Washington Nationals might have acquired center fielder Adam Eaton and catcher Derek Norris this offseason, but they didn't really fill the gaping hole left behind by closer Mark Melancon when he signed with the San Francisco Giants.
But that's about to change soon because Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has reported that the Nationals have been discussing a trade for Chicago White Sox closer David Robertson. However, he also noted that the team "does not want to absorb Robertson's entire obligation, and does not want to move additional prospects after parting with three young pitchers for Eaton."
Now, how can they acquire Robertson if they refuse to absorb his salary and part with assets? Those are huge obstacles indeed.
Robertson is owed $25 million for the next two seasons ($12 million in 2017 and $13 million in 2018). Last season, he recorded 37 saves in 44 opportunities. He also has an earned run average (ERA) of 3.47 and walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP) of 1.36.
It should be noted that the Nationals and White Sox have already completed a deal last December when Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning were sent to Chicago in exchange for outfielder Adam Eaton. So, they don't have much to offer right now in terms of prospects in their farm system. But at least the two clubs already have a good working relationship.
South Side Sox's Jim Margalus has noted that the Nationals probably thought Robertson would come cheap since he didn't play well last season, and he also had surgery on his left knee in the offseason. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case at all.
Meanwhile, R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports believes that Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo may be playing hardball with the White Sox to get a better deal.
Well, the Nationals will have to address their closer situation soon because spring training is almost here.
