Mother Wrestles with Moutain Lion to Save Her Child: A Badge of Extraordinary Courage

The young mother, who has refused to be named, was just like the biblical David who fought with a lion in order to save his sheep.

But, unlike David, she rescued her 5-year-old son from a mountain lion with bare hands and extraordinary courage.

Her son was playing with an older sibling, while she was busy inside their house in Colorado. Just then she heard alarming cries.

She rushed outside and found a lion pouncing upon her young son. There was no thinking twice. She wrestled with the wild animal to free her child from its large, dangerous paws that caught the child's face.

The young boy sustained cuts and bruises on the head and neck. But he was fortunately saved. His mother sustained some cuts too, but she survived too.

It was the child's father who contacted 911 to report the incident. His son was admitted at the Aspen Valley Hospital which declared his condition stable.

According to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the number of lion sighting has been increasing due to disturbance of their habitat. But these wild animals rarely attack humans. As a matter of fact, there have been fewer than a dozen cases of lion attack in the past century in the North American region. It is the young male lions which would usually do so, those which lead nomadic lives and have to survive alone.

But, regardless of the kind of danger, whether natural or man-made, the history of man is marked with extraordinary stories of parental love and great sacrifices. What would a parent not give to his or her child?

One story of a father's desperation to save his child was even made into a movie entitled, John Q. Denzel Washington played the role of John Quincy Archibald, the father who resorted to drastic measures after realizing that his son was doomed to die when his health insurance refused to cover the expense of a heart transplant.

Many would not agree with what he had done, and John Q did accept his punishment. What was important to him was that his son had been given a second chance in life.

What would a parent not do, out of love? And what happens when love at times fail us? The story happened recently in a Disney resort in Florida, when a father tried to rescue his 2-year-old son from an alligator who attacked it. His, his wife's, and everyone else's effort failed. The toddler had already drowned in the lagoon when divers found it.
