Motorola Designs Cop Cars of the Future
Motorola is working diligently to create the Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle 2012 that uses technology to make police officers more efficient in catching criminals.
Motorola Solutions is much different from the cellphone-making arm of the company, Motorola Mobility, because it focuses more on government and corporate technologies. Their innovations for law enforcement could make criminal activity much easier to handle.
The Chevy Caprice PPV has eight mounted outward-facing cameras, used deftly to track all movement around the vehicle, making surprises a virtual impossibility. The expanded vision of the cameras is streamed back to headquarters in real time through 4G LTE bandwidth, giving the officer instant backup in case something unexpected occurs. The computer also has access to the cameras, so it can alert an officer if there is something he missed.
There is a second-perhaps even more technologically advanced-application of the cameras: automated license plate recognition. The feature has eight cameras-and several other infrared ones-constantly scanning the vicinity for offenders, including those with unpaid parking tickets, stolen cars, and known felons. With the cameras able to pick up even speeding cars in bad weather, the system can store up to 10,000 numbers in a shift.
The next-generation cop car will come with Heads-Up Display glasses that performs basic operations and make sure the police officer is not bogged down with tedious tasks. The HUD headset can open the car door, offer infrared vision, record video, and help with situational awareness.
Motorola also worked hard to make sure these new features are user-friendly, and can be accessed quickly even with adrenaline pumping through an officer’s veins. Single button presses and voice commands, designed by engineers who rode along hundreds of times on patrols for maximum efficiency, are intuitive.
The usefulness of the 2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV is already being examined in major cities like Los Angeles, and they will be coming soon to other parts of the country. Although LTE does not cover the entire country, most will soon and cop cars will become more effective than ever.
