Motorola Moto X 2014 vs. Samsung Galaxy S5 Active: Comparison of Specs, Features, Price
When choosing a smartphone, some people go for looks, while others look at the screen size and camera specs before making a decision. But looks aside, it's important that the device is durable and can withstand everyday accidents, sudden downpours, and the like.
Here, we review and compare two smartphones built for an active lifestyle—The Motorola Moto X 2014 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active.
Design:
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active looks very similar to the S5, but compared to the original variant, this phone can take more physical abuse. It has a more rugged look and reinforced corners, and has faux rivets and comes in colors like camo green, neutral gray, and red. It measures 5.72 x 2.89 x 0.35 inches, and weighs 6 ounces.
Meanwhile, the Moto X has an aluminum frame and it measures 5.54 x 2.85 x 0.39 inches and weighs less than the S5 Active at 5.08 ounces.
Features:
The S5 Active has an IP67 waterproofing and a MIL-spec 810G rating. The military specification means that the phone has been tested against shock, dust, vibration, extreme temperatures, high altitude, and humidity. Samsung claims that the S5 Active can survive drops up to 4 feet on a flat surface and still perform well afterwards.
The Moto X doesn't have the same rating as the S5 Active, but it is splash resistant, though it would be wise not to take it in the water when going swimming. The S5 Active can be dunked repeatedly in water though, and one can even take underwater pictures using it.
Both phones' displays are made of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and have the same resolution of 1080 x 1920. However, the S5 Active's Super AMOLED screen measures 5.1 inches, while the Moto X's AMOLED display measures 5.2 inches.
The S5 Active runs on the Android 4.4.2, while the Moto X runs on the Android 4.4.4 and has been updated to Android Lollipop on a few carriers.
Price:
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active costs $659 off contract, while the Motorola Moto X 2014 costs $499 off contract.
