'Mully' Film Lauds Abandoned Boy's Life-Changing Acceptance of Jesus; Now Saving Thousands of Kids
A movie currently playing in U.S. theaters for three days only celebrates the life of Kenyan-born Charles Mully, who as a teenager made a life-changing decision to follow Jesus Christ, leading him to save tens of thousands of abandoned children later on life.
Mully, now 68, told Catholic News Service in an interview published on Monday that he was abandoned by his family when he was just 6 years old.
"My father was addicted to alcohol. At the same time, he created violence. My mother, myself and my younger brother (were affected). One day I woke up and found out that they had gone. That was disaster on my side of life as a young child," he revealed.

For the next 10 years he lived a hopeless existence, rejected by society and contemplating suicide.
At 16, however, he made a very important choice. Mully said that "through a man who invited me to his church, I heard the Word of God and through the spirit of God and through the Lord Jesus Christ, it changed completely my life."
New opportunities opened up for him, he started a taxi business and "wise investments" made him wealthy. In 1989 he decided to dedicate his fortune to helping other abandoned children and opened his first home.
He estimates that with his wife, they have rescued close to 15,000 children to date.
"They have become self-reliant in their future life," he said of children who have completed his program. "We give them the best of healthcare, clothing and shelter, love, fatherly and motherly love. We help them spiritually to grow, give them spiritual nourishment as well as prayer," he added.
Mully's projects have received backing from the Kenyan government and the European Union, with his efforts spreading across several African countries, including Malawi, Zambia, South Africa, Uganda and Tanzania.
"My prayer, my desire is also to talk to the people around the globe and in America that we may take a step of faith and move forward to help our people in our countries to help these children who need to be adopted," Mully said.
"Equal justice for future generations, as God created everything for each one of us."
"Mully," as the film is titled, is only playing for a three-night event in the U.S., from Oct. 3–5, Deadline reported back in June.
"The story of Charles Mully is an unimaginable journey of selflessness," said actor-filmmaker Scott Haze. "My hope is that the works of this man and his wife will echo across the face of the Earth and that we will all pause for a moment and realize that through faith and hard work, anything is possible. This includes changing the world one child at a time."
The Mully Children's Family website highlights its founder's Christian life, and noted that he served as a minster of the Gospel and Christian Youth leader.
Mully also received certificates in evangelism, and pursued short courses in evangelism and theology organized by popular U.S. evangelist Bill Graham in 1993.
