Muslim Man Fined in Malaysia For Divorcing Wife Inside Car
A Malaysian man recently received a fine from his government for divorcing his wife inside of an automobile, according to the Malay publication, Harian Metro.
Hasbullah Hashim was asked to pay the penalty of RM500 by the Shariah court for disobeying the government’s rules pertaining to divorce. He was charged under Section 124 of the Islamic Family Act for divorcing outside the court without permission. Hashim is facing up to 10 days in prison if the fine is not paid.
Section 124 of Islamic Family Law specifically states that “Any man who divorces his wife by the pronouncement of talaq in any form outside the Court and without the permission of the Court commits an offense and shall be punished with a fine not exceeding one thousand ringgit or with imprisonment not exceeding six months or with both fine and imprisonment.”

Talaq is a statement of divorce from the husband to wife in parts of the Muslim culture.
Harian Metro reported that Hashim lost his temper while driving with his wife on his birthday three years ago. This ended in him divorcing her not taking the necessary steps required by his government in order to make it legal or official.
Syarie judge Rafidah Abdul Razak passed the sentence onto Hashim, but before doing so he advised him to be more patient in the future when making decisions such as the one that landed him the fine.
However, the fine for breaking the government’s rules on divorce seem to be in line with a New York City speeding ticket. RM500 in Malaysian currency is equivalent to around $158 U.S. dollars.
