NAMB Forms New Partnership with Puerto Rico Convention

During their May 19 meeting at the board’s headquarters in Alpharetta, Georgia, North American Mission Board trustees approved the first cooperative agreement with the newly formed Convention of Southern Baptist Churches of Puerto Rico. The agreement marks the beginning of a historic new relationship for NAMB with Southern Baptist partners on the Caribbean island.

The cooperative agreement with the Puerto Rico convention marked a significant change in a longstanding relationship. Prior to the new convention’s formation last year, churches and associations in Puerto Rico were connected to NAMB through national missionaries. However, through the new cooperative agreement, NAMB and the Puerto Rico convention will now partner in supporting missionaries and missions work.

“It gives the churches of Puerto Rico ownership of their work, and we come alongside them as partners to encourage them and assist under the leadership of their staff,” said Harry Lewis, NAMB’s executive director for cooperative strategies. “It’s something that we have encouraged, and we look forward to the opportunity of working with them.”
