Promise Keepers announced that the head of the third largest disaster relief agency in the nation will be kicking off each of its 19 conferences this year as the opening keynote speaker.

Dr. Bob Reccord, president of the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, will be speaking to men across the nation for the 2006 conferences, themed "Unleashed - Releasing the Raw Power of Your Heart." The annual series of conferences, one of the largest religious gatherings in the nation, will begin the line-up of its wide-reaching two-day events on June 2 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

"Promise Keepers conferences ignite men," said Thomas S. Fortson, president and CEO of the international ministry to men, in a released statement. "Bob Reccord is the right man to strike the match, pointing men to the power and passion of Jesus. Dr. Reccord's life message is a story of discovering one's calling, and making the most of the fantastic potential that God puts in each of us."

The 2006 conferences come as more studies have shown that more young men are dropping away from the church. The local church system today fails to stimulate men's hearts, so men stay away, said David Murrow, author of Why Men Hate Going to Church. PK events look to change that.

Reccord, who leads more than 5,200 missionaries across North America, will be leading tens of thousands of men to fulfill their calling.

"Every one of us wants to reach and fulfill the destiny for which we were created," he stated, according to Promise Keepers. "Every one of us wants to have our life count, so that when we're gone, we've made a difference. It's a privilege to share these important words with the men at Promise Keepers."

The NAMB head will be addressing the pressing issue of men leaving the church at Promise Keepers' third annual "Media Day" on Mar. 15 that precedes this year's conferences.

Reccord is the author of several books, including Made to Count: Discovering What to do with Your Life and Beneath the Surface: Avoiding Hidden Dangers in your Voyage to Biblical Manhood. He hosts "Strength for Living," which airs daily on Sirius satellite radio and weekly on 250 stations throughout North America. Reccord also speaks to professional and college sports teams. He was a senior pastor in Norfolk, Va., and Brandon, Fla. Reccord and his wife Cheryl co-teach a class in their home church, First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Ga.

Promise Keepers went global for the first time last year. More than 176,600 men attended the 2005 "Awakening" conferences held in 20 U.S. cities, bringing its total since 1990 to 5.5 million.
