Natalie Portman to Play Ruth Ginsburg in Biopic
Natalie Portman, Oscar winning actress, is known for being choosy about the roles she takes on. Most recently, she is reported to have landed the role of one of America's influential women, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in an upcoming biographical picture.
According to a report in Cinema Blend, Portman will portray Ginsburg in the biopic entitled "On the Basis of Sex," which will be about the life and career of the first Jewish woman to be appointed Supreme Court Justice in the US. Focus Films is also reported to be putting up financing for the movie. No director has been announced although the report said that Marielle Heller, who also directed "Diary of a Teenage Girl," is in talks to helm this picture.
"On the Basis of Sex" will reportedly focus on Ginsburg's fight for equal rights for women all throughout her legal career. In her advocacy for women's rights, she encountered many obstacles, and her appointment as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court was a victory for this advocacy. Former President Bill Clinton appointed her to replace one of the retiring Justices -- she was the second female Supreme Court Justice to be appointed, and the first Jewish female Supreme Court Justice.
In the Supreme Court, she continued to advocate for equal rights, and in general, she was known for her liberal views. The report likened Portman to Ginsburg, with Portman being Jewish and also known for espousing liberal views.
The film's script was written by Daniel Stiepleman and received the honor of being part of the 2014 Black List, which is a list of "promising new scripts" in Hollywood. There are no further news about who else will be cast and who the other characters are.
Ram Bergman will executive produce, while Robert W. Cort will produce. Filming is set to start by the end of the year.
