National Cheese Pizza Day Today, Pizza Lovers Celebrate

Cheese pizza is frequently served in homes across America, and on Thursday, people everywhere are celebrating National Cheese Pizza Day.

Observed each year on Sept. 5, the holiday commemorates the ever-popular meal that comes with tomato sauce and cheeses such as mozzarella and Parmesan.

Furthermore, National Cheese Pizza Day also celebrates the influence of Italian immigrants in the U.S., since pizza was originally invented in Naples, Italy.

The oven-baked dish can also be served with a variety of toppings that include meat, vegetables, and even some fruit, to name a few. Also, pizza can be enjoyed hot or cold and is a popular party dish.

Ever since its invention in Italy, pizza has gained approval all over the world. Proving America's obsession with pizza, a reported $32 billion is made in annual pizza sales, according to StatisticBrain.com.

Along with that pizza fact, Americans reportedly eat 252 million pounds of pepperoni pizza each year, and there are over 70,000 pizzerias in the U.S., of which 9,000 are in the state of New York alone.

On Twitter, users are posting about their favorite meal on National Cheese Pizza Day.

Among those Twitters users was William Shatner, who clarified that cheese pizza celebrations could include pizza with extra ingredients as well.

"Yes, Cheese pizza w/ toppings count," wrote the 82-year-old "Star Trek" actor.

Carino's Italian food restaurant with locations in the Southwest is also celebrating National Pizza Day and posted, "Be cheesy! Come have one with us today. See you soon!"

"Sweet dreams are made of cheese," wrote Foodista. "Who am I to disagree? Today is National Cheese Pizza Day!"

Several Twitter users wished their followers a Happy National Cheese Pizza Day before providing links and recipes for homemade pizza, including healthy versions that use whole wheat.

Meanwhile, Thursday also marks the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. Sept. 5 is also National Be Late For Something Day each year.
