National Dog Day: Dog Lovers React
Today the United States is celebrating man’s best friend in the eighth annual National Dog Day. The day is dedicated to spreading public awareness of animal cruelty.
Dog lover Coleen Paige founded National Dog Day in 2004.
The day is utilized by many dog lovers to celebrate their pets offering them extra treats and longer walks, but is also used to support the adoption of stranded dogs.

Although National Dog Day calls for people to adopt stranded pups, supporters of National Dog Day advocate for people to avoid pet stores, newspapers, back-yard breeders, and puppy mills as locations for adoption, urging people instead to adopt dogs from shelters and rescue centers.
The Brooklyn Daily dedicated an article to National Dog Day with in depth stories about dogs that illustrate the loyalty and heroism that many dogs have exhibited to their human counterparts.
Dogs have been loyal and supportive to humans but have also been quintessential to keeping people safe.
Many dogs have helped people escape emergency situations, worked with soldiers in combat zones, and assisted law enforcement officials in protecting people.
In fact, one dog known as Cairo, was essential in leading U.S. forces to Osama bin Laden.
The Brooklyn Daily report said, “Whether a pet or a service dog, man’s best friend is also a good Samaritan, toiling around the clock to save our lives, keep us safe, and bring us joy and comfort.”
As a result of all their hard work and devotion, dog lovers across America have turned to twitter to express their appreciation and love for their dogs.
Twitter user Katherine and Rachel tweeted, “it’s National Dog Day? I LOVE MY DOG! RT if you have a dog.”
Another dog lover, Graham Rahal, tweeted, “Happy National Dog Day to all the owners of furry kids. Give them all a big hug this am!”
Leanne Banks tweeted, “Happy National Dog Day! I love my dog. She gives great advice.”
Other individuals, organizations, and businesses that work with dogs also used the notoriety of the holiday to call upon their Twitter followers to pamper their pups with tummy rubs and hugs and urged people to consider adopting dogs in need of a home.
